New Career

As you know I've been looking for job training. I would like to venture down a new career path. I have definitely considered the WIA training, but now the problem is...there is too much to choose from. There are so many programs out there, and certifications, I don't know what to do. You only get one shot at the WIA money, so I want to use it wisely. So I'm trying to research new careers, but I find that to be very difficult.

I want to find a career that will stay here for a long time, and not be shipped to China. It would be great to learn something in the IT field, but I'm afraid that that will be the first to go. Plus my unemployment money is going to run out soon, and I need to start making some sort of money to live on.

What about barber school? I would be able to work right when I came out of school, but I hear the salaries are really low. I don't want to put in all of that work to make a bad salary. Or perhaps something in healthcare. But I'm leery of this one. There are things I will not do.

I'll keep you updated on my progress.

I Found It

I have been looking feverishly for job training provided by the government. If you want everybody to move toward new career paths, especially in green energy, you have to offer job training. Which leads me to WIA. The Workforce Investment Act.

This federal program offers a one-shot deal to people who have been down-sized or are low income. What it does is gives the "customer" (I love this word, because it makes me feel as if I'm not needy...I'm just somebody who is looking to take advantage of a government program) a voucher that they can take to authorized educational facilities and receive job training. This is what we've been looking for.

It's a little more involved than that, but you get the picture. Like I said, it's a one-shot deal, so you only get this once in your life. But if you are unemployed, you need to start looking for the WIA program in your individual state. You could be on the career path to a new career and the government will pay for your education.

Job Training

When the stimulus bill passed in February I scoured it for any programs for job training. Couldn't find any. Then Obama changed the rules for Pell Grants. I was ecstatic. But he didn't go far enough in reorganizing the program. So I was in the same place I was before. Now that we are in this economic mess I wonder why there is not an emphasis on job training.

With so many people out of work you would think that the administration would be focused solely on job creation. That isn't the case. After all, this country has a lot of other problems facing it right now also. But the central issue is jobs for most Americans. Many people have worked in industries and in small towns in rural America that are just not viable anymore. How are they supposed to get a job in a new industry without training?

If you have worked your entire life in one field, and suddenly find yourself out of work what are you going to do? There are a lot of people in your industry that are also out of work. Your industry may no longer be viable to sustain employment. While I think there may still be some opportunities a degree in journalism might not be the best option with so many newspapers going out of business. Everything is online now and that makes them no longer relevant. While journalism may be your passion, it may not be economically sustainable as a career in the long run. So what are you going to do?

You may have a degree in journalism, or in many other fields that are going by the wayside. You may also have a large load of student loans because it was important to go to a good school and get a degree. A degree that is now worthless. You need to make a living, and you need a new career but how are you going to get it. Job Training is the answer. You have to go back to school to get a new career going. But where is that money going to come from? It isn't smart to take out more student loans to pay for another career that may turn out to be bust also. So you look for job training programs. Chances are that you will not qualify for any that you find. You either made too much money the previous year to qualify, or your degree disqualifies you from eligibility. Just like it does with the Pell Grant.

It was my hope that Obama was going to lift this one restriction on the Pell Grant, but alas I was very dissapointed. I never had a scolarship in school. Nor did I receive a Pell Grant. But now when I need the help, it's not there. How am I supposed to train for one of these Green Jobs when I have no green? This is a new field, and I don't know anything about it. I imagine most people in America are in the same boat that I am. So where is the training going to come from for this new career?

We talk about overhauling so many different things like tort reform and medicare, but has anybody stopped to think that our education system needs to be reformed. Now I'm not talking about K-12 education. I'm talking about what happens after K-12. Colleges and Universities. We strive to get our kids into these places, but are they really doing us any good? Why are so many of these places focused on 4 years? I need to make a change now, and so do many Americans. I can't take 4 years out of my life when I have no other income.

Now don't get me wrong. I know that you can't just pour water on it and poof instant career. But what I'm saying is that there need to be more programs geared towards new careers in less time. I want to go back to school, not pay a lot of money and not waste any more time studying the geography of South America. Plus I want to make money when I get done. Most of the jobs that are a result of any job training program pay $8 - 12/hour. You can't live off of that. It's time to reform adult education.

Where is the President?

I understand that there are matters in the world that need attention. But what is up with the constant photo ops with the French President? When did America become best buds with the French? We've never really cared for the French before. So why now? I think Nicolas Sarkozy has a little crush on Obama.

It really makes me wonder why the President feels the need to make constant world trips. We have an employment situation here in the US. There are not enough jobs, and unemployment is running rampant. Doesn't Obama know that his presidency will be judged strictly on the unemployment issue. If people don't have jobs, he will not get reelected in 2012. I understand that this is a large problem and it does take time, and quite honestly some of it has to work itself out. But come on.

If I were the President, I would be doing whatever I could to get this country moving again. Most people don't like to be micro-managed, but that is exactly what I would do. We expect the President to lead, and speak in broad terms so that the leadership gives a broad message to the American people. I feel, however, that it is time to get dirty. The President needs to be on the phone every day with every governor, Fortune 500 CEO, and large city mayor, university president, military unit, and county government asking them the simple question..."How many jobs did you create today?" This goes for Democrats and Republicans. No mercy to any of them. Then post that information daily for everybody to see. When the President gets resistance from somebody he needs to rake them over the coals. This is a strict numbers game. Create jobs now. Jobs begat jobs. Everybody who is on those rolls will start to get the picture that they need to start producing jobs numbers because the information will be there for everybody to see. People will want to outdo their competitors.

If I were a Republican with higher aspirations, I would get down and dirty and create jobs. There is no way that unemployment is not going to be an issue in 2010. So if you create jobs, you bring that to the table. Nobody wants to see an action plan to job creation. They want to see if you have the muscle to get people working. Plain and simple.

So again I ask...Where is the President? Answer...off in Europe hobknobbing with the Pope. Don't even get me started on that.

Crotch Grabbing

So today I had an interview with a man and he kept grabbing his crotch. What is that all about? Not only that, but we had the interview outside on a very busy thoroughfare. People were banging chairs around, and yelling and screaming during the interview. Was this the only place that we could have had this interview?

I should have known that this interview was not going to go well when they called me three times in the morning to change interview times. Especially considering that this was my third interview with the company and he didn't know that I had had the first two interviews. Or even what the substance was of those interviews.

Now back to the crotch grabbing. First I would like to say formally..."ew". Now that I have that out of the way I must question this action. Why do men do this? I'm a man and I don't need to scratch every two minutes. As it happens over and over, I kept wondering what was going on with this man's crotch. I could hardly concentrate on the interview because he kept doing it. Does he have a funky crotch? Crabs? A rash? Damnit man put on some powder and keep your hands off of your junk.

To Give Notice Or Nor To Give Notice. That Is The Question.

I recently read an article about giving notice to employers when you are going to leave their employment. The article actually covered most of the basic territory of this subject, but I just wanted to give my two cents worth. My response is...it all depends.

Quite honestly I truly feel that when you are going to a new job you should just cut ties and go. It's much like divorce. You each go your separate ways. You are unhappy with your mate and you want to find somebody that suits you better. I'm sure it's better if you remain friends, but unless your looking to leave the door open for a return. It is probably best to close the door.

Most companies that you give your two weeks notice to will ask you why and then ask you what day your last day will be on. Then if at all possible they will have you replaced before you start your shift that day. Then they will tell you if you want to leave, you can go ahead and leave today. It's sorta like firing you. If you say that your job doesn't start for two weeks, what are they going to say? Probably that you need to go now. Well that would be firing you. Then you should be able to collect unemployment for the time you are not working. So out of your own sense of professionalism you get fired. When you apply for a new job they want to know if you will give them two weeks notice when you are about to leave, but they won't allow you to work out those two weeks. Doesn't that seem like a bit of a double standard?

Another aspect to consider is whether or not they give notice to their employees when they are laying people off or firing them. If they are requiring notice from you, shouldn't you get it from them? Seems reasonable to me. Or do they give severence if they fire or lay off? Maybe that is one of those questions you should ask them in an interview. But as job seekers we are too afraid to ask the difficult questions. We feel that that question is too off-putting. But isn't it valid? Employment is a two way street. Before you get married don't you want to know all of the ins and outs of the person you are going to marry?

Now on the other hand, maybe you want a recommendation from your boss. Maybe you don't want people to give you a bad reputation in your industry. Then you are obligated to give them two weeks notice. I would still have a backup plan for whatever their reaction would be.

In the end I say there is nothing like throwing something across the room and saying "I quit you mother #$%#^@&" and marching out of the room to thunderous applause!!!

Complaining

Last night I went out to my local pub and decided to celebrate the fourth. The bartender is a friend of mine, so he felt that he could open up. Don't get me wrong, he didn't go on some long drawn out rant that nobody wanted to hear, but he did say something that got me uppity. I can't say I'm po'd or angry or anything like that. What he said is what any one of us would say at one point or another.

A customer came in that he hated. After he served the customer he said to me..."I hate my job". Now I know what you're thinking..."I've said that". And just so we're clear...I've even said it. But last night it came with new meaning for me. He said it to me. I've been out of work for almost a year. So have a lot of my friends. My best friend is upside down in his mortgage and paying it with his credit card. Yikes. Things ain't good.

So I said, "wow, at least you have a job. I've been out of work for almost a year." He replied, "Don't be a smartass!" Which I was being, but it did get me to thinking. Maybe people with jobs should protest a little less, especially around people that don't have them. And when I go to patronize a business, maybe show me a little more gratitude for choosing your business. Now I'm not referring to my friend. I know that everybody gets frustrated at the people who walk in the door. I'm just saying maybe it's time to take a step back and think about the situation.

Craigslist

Has anybody seen the vile things that are happening on Craigslist employment area? There are so many scams in this area it's unbelievable. You can apply for a customer service job, and then you get this creepy email asking for all of your personal information including your social security number. Then there are the job listings that ask for you to include a picture with your resume. Why do they need this for a simple resume submission? Are they trying to bypass age discrimination laws? I wonder.

Then there are those that request your references before you have even had the opportunity to find out the name of the company. The people that are my solid references did not get that way by me handing out their information willy nilly to everybody. Why would I unleash a potential employer on them before I've even gotten to ask one question?

I simply cannot believe that companies are requesting salary requirements before even having the first of interviews. How can either party negotiate fair compensation for a position without one party even knowing about the position? There should be some sort of discussion of job responsibilities before salary ever enters the picture. Consider this...you just got a job working as a manager at a local retail store and you negotiated a salary of $33,000 without ever talking about the job requirements. Then you get the job and they tell you that along with folding all of the shirts and doing payroll, you were responsible for the United States Nuclear Launch Codes every other Saturday. Don't you think that you should pay a little more than $33,000 for that?

The worst part about the Craigslist employment listings is that you can't flag them if they are bad. The company feels that if they pay the $25 for a listing that it should not be able to be flagged. You can flag everything else on the site, but not the employment listings. This is where the site makes it's money, and they don't want to lose that. Yet scam artists still abound in that area and you can't warn your fellow job seekers. Nor can you warn people of unruly employers that are trying to discriminate.

Craigslist needs to be held accountable for it's postings.

Give Us Your Life

It's funny to hear employers tell you about how wonderful their companies really are. They like to tell you that they really want you to have a life outside of work. Really?!? I find the irony to be quite humorous.

If you are in management with a company, you might as well kiss your life as you know it goodbye. Your ass belongs to the company. You have to put in at the very least 50 hours and put in a 5 day work week. But they really want you to be closer to 60 hours. They really don't care about the days that you actually work, or the shifts that you work. They want you to leave work at 2AM and open the store at 6AM. And if things get tough for the company, you better plan on working 70 hours and put in 6 or 7 days a week. No extra money. No hope for extra consideration when it comes time for an evaluation. You just have to suck it up.

Now employers are making even more headway into our personal lives. When you apply for a job, they want you to give them your passwords to your personal websites. This is an outright invasion into your personal privacy. Yet if you don't give them this information, they just won't hire you. And don't worry, they will find somebody who will give them the information.

Then there are those employers who want you to be involved in community service, because it makes them look better. They want to know about all those extra things that promote their business inadvertantly. People go out of their way now to find a charity to be aligned with. And I don't want to go into anybody's self-motivations, but I would venture a guess that there are many people who could care less about the charity they support. That isn't to say that there are not those people who want to support charities, and do so admirably. But what if your charity doesn't measure up to your interviewers standards? What if you don't support breast cancer, but you support HIV awareness? Is there a stigma there? What if it was something that was controversial such as Free Tibet? Would your potential employer suddenly label you as a radical, or someone that cares about human rights? And really...who has time to do community work when you are working 50 - 70 hours a week?

So beware. When an employer wants you to have a life, that is the first thing they don't want you to have. It may sound good, but it certainly isn't what is going to happen.

A Well Known Pizza Joint

Recently I got an interview with a well know pizza joint. I got this interview through a recruiter. The recruiter told me they had positions in the city and suburbs. I told him that I only wanted to work in the city. This wasn't a great response for him. I explained that I didn't have a car presently, and that I had worked in the suburbs for many years. I think I've paid my dues in the burbs, and I want to work in the city. He told me that I should get a car. They were really looking for somebody to work in both the city and suburbs. I was firm about the issue. He told me that he would see what he could do, and that he may or may not get back to me.

So he did get back to me. He said they had a store in the city they were looking for a manager and that I was the only person he was putting up for the job. Great! The interview had to be in one of his suburban stores however. This didn't bother me. I can make it to the suburbs for an interview. At some point in the conversation I did double-check to make sure there were job openings with this company in the city. He said "yes, he has a number of locations and he actually needs multiple managers." Great!

So I went out to the suburbs for this interview. It took me three and a half hours to get out there for an interview that only lasted 15 minutes. I'm not making any references about the interviewer. He was very professional. He asked me many excellent questions, and told me quite a bit about the company. When it got to my questions however, there was a big problem.

I asked where my experience would fit in with their company. He told me that he had two stores that he was looking for managers for. The one we were sitting in, and one that was an hour further out. I told him that I was here interviewing for one of the stores in the city. He said, "I'm not looking for anybody for the city stores. The only stores I'm looking for are the two I told you about." I was mad. So I said, "I'm sorry, but I can't work at either of these stores. I don't live anywhere near here. The recruiter told me I was interviewing for one of the city stores. I even double-checked that fact." He said, "I don't know what the recruiter was thinking." Well I do know what he was thinking. We ended our interview and took the bus three and a half hours home.

The recruiter just thought he would throw anything he had at the employer and see if it would stick. Regardless of the facts of the situation. The recruiter wasn't doing his job. He was just trying to get his commission, and he didn't care who got hurt in the process. I'm not just saying I suffered in this situation, but the employer was also suffering. It was a waste of his time to interview me. What would have happened if I took that job, and worked there for a couple of weeks and then quit? The recruiter would have gotten paid, the employer would still be without a manager, and there would have been training costs down the drain as well.

This recruiter didn't do their job. Yet another person in our society who thinks that they don't have to do their jobs, yet still get paid.

What New Fresh Hell Is This?

I have been unemployed for almost a year now. It seems an impossible task to find a job now. The labor department says that it is taking about 30 weeks to find a new job, but this only goes to prove the fact that they have a sense of humor. I know people who are going on two years.

Searching for jobs is nothing like it used to be. It used to be that you got dressed up, wrote a nice resume, had a lot of interviews and had your pick of places to work. Well no more! Employment in America has now made me reconsider how many levels of Hell should actually be in Dante's Inferno. There seems to be no accountability for anybody anymore. Do whatever you want and get away with it. Nobody gets in trouble. Let your shameful tendencies out.

What's even sadder about the whole situation is that I don't even want to go back to work. I slaved away at a job for three years, stuck in the same position and working for the same crappy boss that I didn't get to meet before I started to work there. The upper management was awful and let the company sink into an abyss that finally ended in bankruptcy. I made many attempts to fix some of the financial problems, but alas nobody listened and I got laid off. I'm not trying to vent, but my point is valid. When people are offering you money saving ideas as you are about to go into bankruptcy, I don't know....maybe consider them.

Employers now do unscrupulous things to their employees. What's worse is that they get away with this behavior. Nobody is watching the labor laws. Agencies aren't checking up on employers. It's like the wild west is starting all over.

And what about shipping jobs overseas? What about job creation/job growth? Has anybody stopped to think that most people in America don't even know the first thing about Green technology?

What New Fresh Hell Is This?
