A Well Known Pizza Joint

Recently I got an interview with a well know pizza joint. I got this interview through a recruiter. The recruiter told me they had positions in the city and suburbs. I told him that I only wanted to work in the city. This wasn't a great response for him. I explained that I didn't have a car presently, and that I had worked in the suburbs for many years. I think I've paid my dues in the burbs, and I want to work in the city. He told me that I should get a car. They were really looking for somebody to work in both the city and suburbs. I was firm about the issue. He told me that he would see what he could do, and that he may or may not get back to me.

So he did get back to me. He said they had a store in the city they were looking for a manager and that I was the only person he was putting up for the job. Great! The interview had to be in one of his suburban stores however. This didn't bother me. I can make it to the suburbs for an interview. At some point in the conversation I did double-check to make sure there were job openings with this company in the city. He said "yes, he has a number of locations and he actually needs multiple managers." Great!

So I went out to the suburbs for this interview. It took me three and a half hours to get out there for an interview that only lasted 15 minutes. I'm not making any references about the interviewer. He was very professional. He asked me many excellent questions, and told me quite a bit about the company. When it got to my questions however, there was a big problem.

I asked where my experience would fit in with their company. He told me that he had two stores that he was looking for managers for. The one we were sitting in, and one that was an hour further out. I told him that I was here interviewing for one of the stores in the city. He said, "I'm not looking for anybody for the city stores. The only stores I'm looking for are the two I told you about." I was mad. So I said, "I'm sorry, but I can't work at either of these stores. I don't live anywhere near here. The recruiter told me I was interviewing for one of the city stores. I even double-checked that fact." He said, "I don't know what the recruiter was thinking." Well I do know what he was thinking. We ended our interview and took the bus three and a half hours home.

The recruiter just thought he would throw anything he had at the employer and see if it would stick. Regardless of the facts of the situation. The recruiter wasn't doing his job. He was just trying to get his commission, and he didn't care who got hurt in the process. I'm not just saying I suffered in this situation, but the employer was also suffering. It was a waste of his time to interview me. What would have happened if I took that job, and worked there for a couple of weeks and then quit? The recruiter would have gotten paid, the employer would still be without a manager, and there would have been training costs down the drain as well.

This recruiter didn't do their job. Yet another person in our society who thinks that they don't have to do their jobs, yet still get paid.
